Chiang Mai Thailand Sightseeing

Chiang Mai City is culturally and socially the most significant city in northern Thailand. One of the main highlights of the city is that despite the flow of tourists and lot of expats living in the city, it is still culturally very Thai. Many of the things to do in Chiang Mai cater not just to tourists but the local Thai population also, and this becomes evident when checking out the places to eat here. Being an ancient city that dates back to the 13th century when it was established as a new capital of the Lanna kingdom, Chang Mai still retains its historical remnants. With strong Buddhist traditions and over 300 temples, Chiang Mai is littered with sites of spiritual significance. Some of the more prominent Buddhist attractions of the city are Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, Wat Chiang Man, and Wat Phra Singh. For history buffs deciding on what to see in Chiang Mai must also include the old defensive wall and moat that was built and used to ward off foreign attacks between the 13th and 15th century. Today, Chiang Mai is equally popular among tourists and religious pilgrims, making the city a popular destination.
